Description

CIS Microsoft Intune for Windows 11 Benchmark, recommendation 98.1 (Level 1).

The test passes when an assigned settings catalog policy for Windows sets Windows Hello For Business > Enable ESS with Supported Peripherals to Enhanced sign-in security will be enabled on systems with capable software and hardware, following the existing default behavior in Windows. For systems with one secure modality (face or fingerprint) and one insecure modality (fingerprint or face), only the secure sensor can be used for sign-in and the insecure sensor(s) will be blocked. This includes peripheral devices, which are unsupported and will be unusable. (default and recommended for highest security), and no other assigned policy sets it to something else.

Remediation action

  1. In the Microsoft Intune admin center, go to Devices > Configuration and open (or create) a settings catalog policy for Windows 10 and later.
  2. Add Windows Hello For Business > Enable ESS with Supported Peripherals and set it to Enhanced sign-in security will be enabled on systems with capable software and hardware, following the existing default behavior in Windows. For systems with one secure modality (face or fingerprint) and one insecure modality (fingerprint or face), only the secure sensor can be used for sign-in and the insecure sensor(s) will be blocked. This includes peripheral devices, which are unsupported and will be unusable. (default and recommended for highest security).
  3. Assign the policy to your Windows devices, and remove any other assigned policy that sets it to something else.
